Designing Brand Identity

Designing Brand IdentityI’ve always been fascinated with company logos. Some are just perfect in simplicity and are great in showing what the company it represents is about. That’s why I just love this book by Alina Wheeler, called “Designing Brand Identity”.

The book describes a diciplined process to create and implement an effective brand identity. A company’s visual identity is important because, as Alina puts it, sight provides more information about the world than any other sense. Did you realize that repeated exposure makes symbols so recognizable that companies, such as Target, Nike and Apple have dropped their corporate signatures in national advertising? It’s because we recognize a company’s colors. Think about it: the moment you see a brown truck driving down your street, you’ll know it’s a UPS.

Designing Brand Identity carries many examples of branding, from business cards and website layouts to company car advertisements. It gives different examples of companies, such as Unilever (one of my favorite brands), and shows in short how Unilever got to it’s current symbol. In total, this second edition features forty- five best-practices cases.
I liked the examples so much that I practically forgot about the text in the book. It was only then that I noticed each chapter contained many quotes on brand identity design, which I think is always pleasant to read.

If you’re looking to get your business a new logo or if you’re a graphic designer, than this is a great book to get your hands on. It’s easy to read and takes you through all the different aspects of building a brand identity. Besides that, it’s just great one to peak should you be looking for some inspiration.

You can order your copy at Amazon.

Thanks to Alina Wheeler.

Thoughts Aside
With various credit card offers from citibank and discover credit card, it is tempting to get new ones. To top everything off, business credit card offers such as waving off the credit card fee and giving zero percent interest incentive for the first six months doesn’t make matters easier. Though generally in the long run, getting a new credit card only leads to getting credit card debt consolidation. This is why using bank checks to make payments keeps the spending more in control.
