@ventures: Uber Premium

Trendwatching recently did a briefing about so-called Uber Premium products (you should pronounce it using the best German accent you got). Uber Premium is all about status-craving consumers hunting down the next wave in exclusive goods, services and experiences that are truly out of reach for 99.9% of the mass. These are the luxury products functioning as ultimate status symbols. You shouldn’t think about that exclusive Dolce & Gabbana crystal-studded Mickey T-shirt (priced USD $1,400) or those $100 bonbons. No, Uber Premium is for the richest of the richest.

So if you want to get your company of the ground but are having trouble with your margin, think about the people in Hollywood, Dubai and Monaco, eager to get their hands on something they don’t already own. Here’s some inspiration for you.

1. Rock and Royal - Custom Chandeliers
Dutch company Rock and Royal was established in 2005. They’ve teamed up with artist Hans van Bentem to create unique light fixtures that are sold to the wealthy across the world. The crystal chandeliers are priced from EUR 12,000 and take approximately two months to design and manufacture. Now that’s the kind of thing a sheik can swing on during a party.

2. IcedOutEmz - Bently Knob
What could make your Bentley fancier than it already is? How about a diamond and white gold gear shift? A gear company called IcedOutEmz created the amazing jeweled shift, which at $150,000, is nearly as expensive as the Bentley Continental GT which sells for around $165,000. The shift has 30 carats of diamonds and took 100 hours of labor to complete. The gear shift is on display at the company’s headquarters in Las Vegas. Throw some carat on it, and you can make anything Uber Exclusive.

3. Millionaire Fair - Event for the Rich & Famous
Cashing in on the status craving millionaires is the Millionaire Fair. Launched in 2002 by Dutch Gijrath Media Groep BV (GMG) in Amsterdam, the annual fair brings together top names from the international luxury goods industry and Uber Premium consumers. A new Russian edition which took place from 24-28 September in Moscow, was a massive success, and for 2006, fairs in Shanghai, Kortrijk (Belgium) and Cannes are in the works. Chinese and Russian competition comes from the Extravaganza Fair. It’s a great business to be in, turnover at the Millionaire Fairs in Amsterdam and Moscow is in the hundreds of millions of euros.
